Comfort Food… Lego Style

Rescue Helicopter from 1975

In times of stress and uncertainty, we all have those certain comfort foods we lean on. AFOL’s like me often have comfort sets (in addition to comfort foods). I’m developing a list of sets I know I had as a child and beginning to dig through all the plastic containers marked “vintage” and rebuilding some of these sets.

Our first comfort set is a favorite from 1975 – Rescue Helicopter: Legoland 480-1 (691-1 in Europe).

First, let me say – what a great little build! Not to complicated but the finished model absolutely the “vision” of a multi-role helicopter from the era. Very high play-ability, its a sturdy little build, the blades turn as does the rear rotor.

This is a model before the “minifigure scale standard” which may be a good thing. As someone who grew up in the 1970’s, it didn’t and wouldn’t prevent me from playing with this model alongside the minif0gures of the day. After all, back then we had to “imagine” the minifgures had arms and could bend to sit.

This is just pure Lego. The simplicity of the design exemplifies the magic which Lego represents for many of us. This little helicopter builds well, plays well and feeds the imagination. It definitely harks back to a more simple time, a feeling which should give us all a bit of comfort in these odd times.

What are your comfort sets? Stay safe, stay healthy and build on.
